My NFL Draft Top 15

What Changed?

New Orleans Saints

Veterans Signed:

TE Coby Fleener (Indianapolis)
LB Craig Robertson (Cleveland)
LB James Laurinaitis (Los Angeles)
DT Nick Fairley (Los Angeles)

Veterans Lost:

WR Marques Colston (retirement)
S Rafael Bush (Detroit)
WR Seantavius Jones (Philadelphia)
RB Khiry Robinson (New York Jets)
TE Ben Watson (Baltimore Ravens)
LB Ramon Humber (New England Patriots)

Draft Picks:

DT Sheldon Rankins (Louisville)
WR Michael Thomas (Ohio State)
S Vonn Bell (Ohio State)
DT David Onyemata (Manitoba, Canada)
RB Daniel Lasco (California)

My Thoughts:

The Saints only added four players via free agency but all four should contribute for the club. Nick Fairley is a former 13th overall pick from the Detroit Lions who is a capable interior linemen. He will certainly be in the rotation at tackle. Coby Fleener is a younger, more athletic tight end than the departed Ben Watson so this was a win for the Saints as well. He should emerge as the starter. Craig Robertson had 34 starts in the past three seasons for the Browns is an athletic, solid tackling linebacker. He will likely backup at the Will linebacker position but could earn the starting job as well. The Saints lost a number of players as well but all are replaceable parts. WR Marques Colston retired but his ability really dropped last year and will be easily replaced in the lineup.

The draft was not terrific but a couple of players were added that could have an impact in 2016. Sheldon Rankins is an athletic, productive defensive tackle that will certainly be in the rotation with Nick Fairley and John Jenkins. He has all the tools to be great. WR Michael Thomas from Ohio State is the nephew of former NFL WR Keyshawn Johnson, and at 6'3 and 212 pounds, he resembles the former first overall pick of the Jets. He runs with explosion and has deceptive speed but his route running needs a lot of work to get open at the next level. He battles hard and loves to compete. He could emerge as a starter with a great camp. Vonn Bell is a talented safety that could emerge in New Orleans. He doesn't have ideal size but his excellent vision and quickness make up for it. David Onyemata is a raw, athletic gifted defensive lineman with upside although likely some time before he contributes. Running back Daniel Lasco had some great moments in college and has a terrific burst. May find a role with the team.

Overall the Saints added several positive improvements to the roster without sacrificing much of note. They should emerge as a stronger team at the start of 2016 than they were at the end of last year.
