My Thoughts:

The Baltimore Ravens did lose several good veteran players off the roster this season. One of those was linebacker Daryl Smith who is long in the tooth at 34-years old but has 172 career stats and 1066 total tackles. In his three seasons with Baltimore he totalled 209 total tackles and 179 assists and that kind of production is difficult to replace. However the Ravens did draft a talented kid from BYU named Kamalei Correa and he has the talent to step into this defense and contribute.

The Ravens will miss starting offensive guard Kelechi Osemele who fled to the Oakland Raiders. The 26-year old linemen started 51 games over four seasons with the Ravens. Quarterback Matt Schaub had plenty of experience in behind of Joe Flacco but he was a disposable asset and backup Ryan Mallett can step in if called upon. WR Chris Givens, S Brynden Trawick and Courtney Upshaw were depth players and will be replaced without too much concern.

While the Ravens lost several roster players, they picked up a legitimate threesome of their own in TE Ben Watson, WR Mike Wallace and S Eric Weddle.

Watson has had a long, uneven pro career and the 35-year old journeyman is coming off of his finest season in the NFL. He caught 74 passes and 6 touchdowns last year for the Saints and the Ravens quickly scooped him up this offseason. Maxx Williams may push him for playing time but Watson could emerge with 60+ receptions once again this year although he is also a risk to finish with less than 30 grabs.

Mike Wallace is fast and explosive but runs lazy routes and too often is not where the quarterback expects him to be. Prior to last season he had 47 career touchdown receptions in only 95 games and has a real knack for getting open down the field with his legitimate sprinter speed. However he is now on his fourth team for a reason and that is his inconsistent, sometimes lazy effort on the field He has a real chance to start at a receiver position this season and has the talent to put up 1000 yards although the risk is there for another 473 yard stinker like last year.

Eric Weddle was a long-time starter at safety for the Chargers and he moves over to the Ravens to hopefully start at free safety. He is dependable and has good range.

Along with the three veteran signings, the Ravens added 11 players through the draft, most of whom are likely to stick. Ronnie Staley should start at one of the two offensive tackle position, Kamalei Correa we mentioned above and several other defensive players have a chance to contribute. Kenneth Dixon was an interesting fifth round running back pickup and he has all the tools to emerge with significant playing time in Baltimore. Chris Moore has some size and ability to compete for the 3rd or 4th receiver spot on the team.

Overall, thanks to a strong draft and nice targeting of veteran players, the Ravens look better on paper than they did a year ago. Expect a push back on the Bengals and Steelers this season.
