My Thoughts:

The Detroit Lions took a massive hit this offseason with the surprise retirement of Calvin Johnson, stud receiver for the past nine seasons. He caught 731 passes for 11619 yards and 83 touchdowns in those nine seasons and you simply cannot replace a superstar like him in the lineup. The Lions did add a couple of veterans to add depth at receiver but Marvin Jones as well as Jeremy Kerley has no real chance to match his contribution in Detroit. Marvin Jones looks like the starter at one receiver position with Golden Tate at the other. I like Jones a lot and he skills will help the Lions on the field but he is a marginal WR2 at best. I am surprised that the Lions didn't address the receiver position in the draft.

The Lions drafted talented tackle Taylor Decker in the first round and he should emerge as the starter at right tackle. He is a big improvement for the club. Graham Glasgow is a formidable center who could surprise and start if he has a good training camp. He has the skills to anchor a line for a line time to come.Joe Dahl from Washington State will likely backup at guard this year but he is another one with the skills needed to step in and start. Geoff Schwartz has 39 career starts in seven seasons but is best served coming off the bench. Steven Ridley was a once promising running back that has struggled to shake the injury bug and he looks like strictly a depth player now. The Lions also picked up some veteran defensive backs that could help with depth at the position.

The Lions did a decent job in their draft and picked up some solid depth guys via free agency but losing Calvin Johnson and not targeting the receiver position in the draft is a little crazy in my opinion. There were some interesting receiver options available mid draft and to target none of them when a stud like Calvin Johnson retires early is a baffling decision. I do like the upgrades at offensive line though and if the three rookies can find their grove, perhaps the Lions can finally get a running game that could take the pressure off of 40-passes per game Matthew Stafford. We will see but I cannot give the Lions off season a passing grade.
