This Week in Football

Hello everyone and welcome to TWIF Notes for the final week of May. The agonizingly, long, painful NFL offseason is coming to an end soon and all the hype and possibilities for every team will soon crumble away, leaving a few elite teams left to contend for the Super Bowl. The long offseason is unique when compared to the other North American sports and it tends to lead to optimism and possibilities for the fans of all 32 NFL teams.

Johnny Manziel continues to see both his football career and his life go up in flames as his penchant for being in the news for all the wrong reasons continue. Whether he is in disguise hanging out in Vegas, slapping up his girlfriend or having a fight in a club, Manziel and trouble have unfortunately become an inseparable entity. It is quite sad to watch such a promising career get flushed down the toilet and I hope he finds a way to put this self-destruction behind him and rebuild his life before it is too late.

Baltimore Ravens starting quarterback Joe Flacco is still recovering from his torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and will miss his team's organized activities this offseason. His head coach John Harbaugh believes however that Flacco will be ready for the start of training camp. The Ravens had better pray that Flacco is ready as their entire 2016 fortunes will rest on the arm and football IQ of Flacco. If he is slower in his recovery than expected, the Ravens will have to hand the ball over to Ryan Mallett and that could be a disaster for the club to begin this year. The news is encouraging on Flacco but it is still a situation to keep on top of.

Keeping on top of the Cleveland Brown's offensive depth chart this off season is akin to trying to remember all of the characters on popular television show Game of Thrones. It isn't easy to break down the 2016 starting lineup with so many battles that will take place during training camp. The wide receiver stable became a little less crowded with the release of veteran receiver Brian Hartline. This was not an unexpected move with the Browns drafting a plethora of rookie receivers to beef up the position. Hartline was a disposable part and the Browns are heading towards a legitimate youth movement. There is plenty of rumbling coming out of Cleveland that Duke Johnson may earn the full time running back slot for the team and rookie receiver Corey Coleman is expected to start.

The Miami Dolphins are very pleased with the progression of second-year running back Jay Ajayi this offseason and he has clearly pulled ahead of his competition in Miami. He has looked quick, powerful and ready to step in as the go-to running back in Miami. Ajayi could have a very good season behind a strong offensive line and a good passing attack to take the pressure off of him.

Coveted free agent Arian Foster is still available as he is waiting for his achilles injury to be cleared. He is close to full strength and he will garner a lot of interest around the NFL. He will turn 30-years old this season which is often the kiss of death for big running backs but his unique skill set will have a number of teams interested including the Seattle Seahawks, the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots, amongst others. He is still capable of moving the chains and piling up carries for the right team.

DeflateGate just will not go away as New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady's legal team will officially file its appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit Monday, May 23, which is the deadline to do so. 'The facts here are so drastic and so apparent that the court should rehear it,' attorney Ted Olson said.

There is simply a massive amount of fluff articles at this time of year that are simply not worth your time to try and keep up on. Every player has plans, every player expects big things, every player wants increased responsibility and every player is expected to shine but until the pads come on and the contact is live, none of this stuff truly matters. There are important blurbs to be found based on fact and not speculation and hope but you have to find the needles in a giant haystack of fluff. Tyrod Taylor wants to open up the offense? Which quarterback doesn't in May? Rookie receivers expect to have lots of success in first year? Which player doesn't say he expects to contribute? Show me a player without that confidence and I will show you a player soon to be watching from home. Quarterback X not falling behind despite not practicing with team? Do you really expect all the NFL coaches to admit, 'Yes, Quarterback X is going to be out of a job if he doesn't get his ass back on the field practicing.'

Players and coaches are taught to not be controversial and not to add fuel to the reporter's fire and as a result 99% of what they say can be dismissed as unneccessary fluff. Finding the 1 percent is going to be my task going forward, saving you countless hours of research and reading. This will be especially useful when training camp opens up.

That's it for the inaugural TWIF Notes for the 2016 season. See ya next week!
