PF Daily: Fantasy Football Tutorial Series: Beginner

What is Fantasy Football

Back to Tutorial Series Index page

HISTORY

By all accounts, fantasy football came into being way back in 1962. Oakland Raiders part-owner, Wilfred Winkenbach along with two columnists for an Oakland newspaper put together an eight-team fantasy league. However due to the volume of work involved in calculating and tracking the statistics, it never truly caught on with the mainstream public. That changed mid 1990's as the popularity of the Internet began to explode. It began much easier to keep on top of the stats, fantasy football league tracking websites came onto the scene and fantasy football erupted. Without question, today it is one of the most popular hobbies in North America.

"Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan." -- Tom Landry

What exactly is fantasy football?

What football fanatic out there would not want to own and run an NFL football franchise. Putting together a team that can win championships would be a dream of millions of fans. However this is a dream that the strong majority of the population will never see the light of day. It costs billions of dollars now to buy and run an NFL team and last time I checked, the median salary for people around the world is not in that ballpark

Fantasy football is the closest thing to running a professional football team that we will ever experience.

Who wouldn't love a chance to put together a roster with Andrew Luck, A.J. Green and Todd Gurley all on it?

Who wouldn't love a chance to have LeSean McCoy and Marshawn Lynch in the same backfield?

Who wouldn't smile to put together a receiver group of Calvin Johnson, Odell Beckham Jr. and Jordy Nelson?

If the answer is 'yes' to those questions then fantasy football is a hobby you will enjoy. Fantasy football is simply put a game in which you get to be the Owner / General Manager / Head Coach of a franchise and you participate in a Draft to select real NFL players to score points for your team. We will go through scoring rules later on within the tutorial. There are countless types of fantasy leagues, rules and starting lineups in today's hobby and I will break many of those down within this detailed study.

Is it time to play fantasy footballl?

The question is not 'is it time to play fantasy football?' but why you haven't already started. This hobby doesn't detract from the game of football but instead enhances it in a wonderful and challenging way. You can make new friends by joining a league or grab a group of long-time friends and create something special that will last a long time. Watching a game between two teams out of the playoff race normally does not truly get your heart pumping and your interest level rising. However if your fantasy starting quarterback is playing on one team and a starting running back on the other, you will be tuned into this game, living and dying on every single play. Cheering your team on becomes an addictive weekly side show to the games themselves. You will find yourself looking at the bottom of the screen for updates as to who has scored, who is lighting up the passing game and who is churning up big chunks of yardage. It becomes another fun reason for a football fan to care, to laugh, to cheer, to cry and to look forward to the games. Once you give this hobby a try, you will likely be hooked for life.
