Tidbits - Tight End position

Often the hidden gem of fantasy football, a great tight end can be the difference between winning and losing throughout the many weeks of a fantasy season. Here are some interesting tidbits from the tight end position over the past five seasons.

1. All Gronk, all the time:
Rob Gronkowski has dominated the tight end position when healthy over the past five seasons. Yes I know that is not really a shocking statement to even the most casual of football fans. But did you know that Gronkowski has three of the top five fantasy seasons at the position over the last five seasons. When he is healthy, he is a fantasy beast. In 2011, Rob Gronkowski put up a staggering 331 fantasy points. That was 114 points more than the 3rd hightest tight end that season, teammate and current Inmate Football League champion Aaron Hernandez. That is pretty impressive.

2. If not Gronk, shine the spotlight on Graham:
Ok, if the first tidbit didn't blow your mind then maybe this one will. The top five fantasy performances in the past five years were from Rob Gronkowki with three and Jimmy Graham with two. Graham also had 9th and 11th best fantasy seasons over that span which gives both players seven of the top-eleven fantasy efforts. Graham caught a staggering 16 touchdowns passes in 2013.

3. A Rise to Glory:
2015 season saw three new tight ends jump into the top ten of fantasy outputs since 2011. Redskins tight end Jordan Reed finished with 248 fantasy points, Tights tight end Delanie Walker put up 242 fantasy points and Browns tight end Gary Barnidge put up 237 fantasy points.

4. Double Digit Touchdowns? No problem:
A tight end has caught double digits in touchdowns thirteen times over the five seasons. Some of the highest touchdown totals came with relatively pedestrian reception totals. Check this out:
* Vernon Davis caught 13 touchdowns on only 52 receptions back in 2013
* Tyler Eifort caught 13 passes in the same 52 receptions last year
* Julius Thomas caught an amazing 12 touchdowns on only 43 receptions in 2014
* Rob Gronkowski caught 11 touchdowns on 55 receptions in 2012

5. Who Needs touchdowns?:
On the flip side, many tight ends have racked up receptions with minimal touchdowns. Check this out:
* Jason Witten caught a staggering 110 receptions in 2012 but a poor 3 touchdowns
* Kellen Winslow caught a respectable 75 receptions in 2011 but a meagre 2 touchdowns
* Jason Witten infamously got on our list against with 77 receptions with 3 touchdowns last year
* Also last year, Zach Ertz caught 75 passes but scored just twice

6. Getting to the endzone is overrated:
The worst reception to no-touchdown performance took place during the 2014 season when Redskins tight end Jordan Reed caught 50 passes but failed to reach the endzone.

7. The Best Bang for your Buck award:
The most touchdowns caught with less than 30 receptions came in 2014 when Dwayne Allen caught 8 touchdowns on only 29 receptions.

8. TE Explosion:
Last year nine tight ends caught at least 72 receptions. The year before only four tight ends managed the feat.

9. A Good TE is Hard to Find:
Over the five years, 26 tight ends have managed more than 200 fantasy points in PPR scoring leagues, an average of just over five per year.

10. Best Bang for your Buck, part 2:
The most receptions with less than 100 targets was by Antonio Gates in 2014 when he caught 69 receptions on only 98 targets.
